Patrick Coutts was one of the merchants who endorsed the Association of 1770 at Williamsburg. Others included George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

Patrick’s brother, The Rev. Thomas Coutts, had the distinction of presiding at the marriage of Thomas Jefferson and Martha Wayles Skelton on January 1, 1772
