Pte John Coutts, Victorian Mounted Rifles and 9th Light Horse Regiment, Branxholme, Vic, Australia

 Serial No 2.  1906 Awarded Colonial Auxillary Forces Long Service Medal 1902-1910

 “He was a member of the Citizen Military Forces for 33 years, firstly with the Victorian Mounted Rifles and later with the 9th [sic] Light Horse Regiment”.

The Portland Guardian, May 7, 1888 had Private John Coutts participating on an “attack on Myamyn”. On May 25 1894 it reported on him at the Queen’s Birthday Mounted Rifles Tournament coming second at ‘tilting at rings”. Note his serial number was 2, he joined the VMR the year it was established when Australia was a very young country.
