Coates

Michael Joseph Coates, LL.M (Lond), B.Ec, LL.B (Hons)

Arms: Or, a stag's head erased Gules between the attires a phaeon Azure, in chief two scrolls Proper each having pendent a seal the dexter Vert the sinister Gules, in base a bar wavy of the Third.

Crest: A kookaburra perched Proper.

Motto: CONSENSUS FACIT LEGEM

Grant: Lyon Register: Volume 88, Folio 13.

"The basic design of the arms, being the gold field, stag's head and phaeon between the antlers, is based on arms of Coates first recorded in the Lyon Register in 1763.

At the gracious suggestion of the Lord Lyon, certain personal symbols were added to this basic design. These include the two legal scrolls in chief representing my profession as a Barrister and Solicitor and the bar wavy in base representing my love of the sea.

The motto translates roughly as "consent makes the law", which is a legal principle requiring parties to a contract to abide by their bargain.

The Arms were painted Mrs. Yvonne Holton, Herald Painter, and I am delighted with the result."
